Highlanders Hang Tough, But Fall Late at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth Golden Flyers used a late run to break open a tie game and grabbed a 66-52 win over Houghton in an Empire 8 women's basketball matchup on Tuesday.

The Highlanders played strong throughout the contest, turning the ball over only 15 times and getting key performances from seniors Hannah Fink (Coudersport, PA, Coudersport HS) and Christel Enriquez-Fisher (Colorado Springs, CO, William Mitchell HS).

It was back and forth early, with Houghton edging ahead by an 8-2 score. Nazareth would regain their composure and pulled into the lead 14-13 and kept that lead for most of the first half, until Enriquez-Fisher nailed a jumper at the buzzer to send the teams into the locker rooms deadlocked at 33. Fink scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Highlanders.

The second half was another battle, but the hosts were able to jump ahead by seven (44-37) over the first five minutes of the second stanza. The Highlanders clawed their way back to tie the score at 48 with just under nine minutes to go. However, Houghton was unable to keep up their push and Nazareth responded to finish the game on an 18-4 run to take the win.

Fink finished with 19 points and five rebounds, while Enriquez-Fish tallied 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Hannah Manwaring (Barton, NY, Tioga Central HS) and Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) contributed eight points apiece.

Nazareth converted on 47 percent of their shots from the field, including a scorching 7-for-15 showing from long range. The Highlanders shot 37 percent from the floor. Houghton held a 40-32 edge in rebounds.

The Highlanders (4-15; 1-10 E8) are back in action on Friday, Feb. 6 when they host E8 foe Ithaca College.
