Highlanders Rely on Defense for Win

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Alfred State Pioneers came out gunning, jumping out to a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter, before the Houghton defense took control.  Over the final three quarters the Highlanders would outscore the Pioneers 41-12 on their way fourth win of the season.

Game Flow:
      >Alfred State closed the first quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 20-11 lead.
      >In the second quarter Elle Reed (Sherman, NY, Sherman Central School) scored 11 points for the Highlanders as they outscored the Pioneers 22-4 to take a 33-24 lead into the half.
      >The Pioneers drew to within five points on two occasions in the third quarter, but six fourth quarter turnovers allowed the Highlanders to pull away for the win.
 
The Analysis:
      >The Highlanders capitalized on 24 Pioneer turnovers, converted them into 17 points, and held a 17-6 advantage in steals.
      >After converting eight of 18 first quarter shots, the Houghton limited Alfred State to only five baskets on 46 shots, including 1-18 from beyond the arch, for the remainder of the game (10.9%).
 
Clutch Performances:
The Highlanders:
      >Reed led all scorers with 13 points and added three assists and five steals.
      >Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) picked up her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and bringing down a season-high 14 rebounds.
 
The Pioneers:
      >Jackie Lieb pulled down 12 rebounds and Minnie Robinson dished out six assists.
 
Next Time Out:
Houghton heads north to SUNY Canton on Saturday, December 12 to take on the Roos at 3:00 p.m. for their final game before the break.
