HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The 19th ranked Ithaca Bombers scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 shutout of Houghton women's soccer Saturday afternoon.

The game was evenly played through most of the first half, with neither team getting many scoring opportunities. The Bombers broke through in the 39th minute. Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville Central) made a diving stop but couldn't control the ball as she fell to the ground and it slipped across the line.

Shots were 8-3 in favor of Ithaca at the half.

The Bombers increased their pressure in the second half, but Sprout kept turning away the opportunities with diving stops or reaching up to tip balls over the crossbar. The Bombers were able to get a two-goal cushion in the 64th minute.

Ithaca outshot the Highlanders 20-6 on the day.

Houghton travels to take on Hartwick on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
