ALFRED, N.Y. -- Houghton responded to their recent three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Alfred University in Empire 8 women's soccer action on Wednesday night.

It took a while for the visitors to get going in this contest. Although the Highlanders outshot the Saxons 12-1 in the first half, the teams entered the locker rooms scoreless.

Sarah Gabriele (Mahwah, NJ, Eastern Christian) finally got Houghton on the board in the 53rd minute, taking a pass from freshman Alexis Lamb (Newark Valley, NY, Home School). Fifteen minutes later the Highlanders got some breathing room when leading scorer Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville Central) tallied her 10th goal of the campaign. Gabriele got the assist.

Ellison got the helper on the team's final goal of the night, an open net tally from Darlene Eckhardt (Eden, NY, Eden) in the 80th minute.

Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville Central) made two saves in goal as the Highlanders outshot the Saxons 20-2.

Houghton is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they host Ithaca College at 3 p.m.
