HOUGHTON, N.Y.-- The Highlander Women's Soccer team performed flawlessly in tonight's game against Alfred State, beating the Pioneers 4-0.

In the first period of the game, there were numerous scoring opportunities for the Highlanders; two of which they capitalized on. At the 9:45 mark, what looked like a goal from Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville Central) turned out to be a few inches off, hitting the left post. After 9 shots and nearly 33 minutes into the game, the Highlanders were able to put their first goal of the game on the board. To add to the momentum, less than a minute later another Highlander goal was scored; both goals were compliments of Ellison.

Nikki Garns (Chambersburg, PA, Greencastle-Antrim) was credited with the assist in the first goal, followed by Sarah Gabriele (Mahwah, NJ, Eastern Christian) for the second goal. Goalie Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville Central) held the Pioneers by contributing with 5 saves and not allowing any Alfred scoring accomplishments. 

3 corner kicks and 30 minutes into the second period, a break-away goal by Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) put the Highlanders up 3-0. With time running out, Shattell's goal seemed to confirm the win, but the Highlanders weren't done yet. Nearly 40 seconds left and with the assistance of Darlene Eckhardt (Eden, NY, Eden), Ellison did it again, giving the Highlanders the final score of 4-0.

Houghton looks forward to their game on Saturday, October 25th where they will play at home against the University of Rochester at 2pm.
