Women's Soccer Nets 3-0 Home Win over U of R

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Highlanders got two goals early in the second half to break open a close game and grab a 3-0 win over the University of Rochester in women's soccer action at Burke Field on Saturday.

The teams went back and forth early, but neither team produced many scoring chances. It took a substitute to put the Highlanders on the board first in the 30th minute. Jessica McDowell (Macedon, NY, Gananda) scored her first goal of the season just 16 seconds after entering the contest. McDowell's15 yard shot went past the diving Yellowjackets keeper and just sneaked inside the right post. Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville Central) got credit with the assist.

In the 48th minute, it was Ellison who gave the Highlanders a two-goal cushion with her team-leading 18th goal of the campaign. Ellison took a pass from
Sarah Gabriele (Mahwah, NJ, Eastern Christian) and sent an arcing 25-yard shot over the keeper and just under the crossbar. Two minutes later a long ball from the Highlanders went to the top of the Yellowjackets box. An on-rushing Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) forced the Rochester keeper to attempt a quick clearing kick, but the ball hit a Rochester defender and bounced straight back over the keeper and toward the net. Shattell continued her run and calmly deposited the ball into the open net.

Shawna Sprout made some key close range saves to keep the clean slate. She totaled seven saves on the afternoon as the Yellowjackets held an 18-12 advantage in shots.

Houghton (8-6-1) will wrap up its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1 as they host St. John Fisher in an E8 matchup.
