Volleyball Goes 6-0 to Sweep Alfred University and Allegheny College



The Highlander Volleyball team had a solid performance in their dual match today, going 6-0 to sweep both the Alfred University Saxons and the Gators of Allegheny College.

In the first match against the Saxons, the Highlanders took charge from the very beginning—winning the first set by a large margin, 25-15.

While the second set was closer, the Highlanders were still able to shut down the Saxons 25-20. Houghton was able to go the distance and finish the match in 3 sets. The third and final set was a 25-23 victory for the Highlanders.

Defensively, Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) was credited with 12 digs, Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Christian) with 13, and Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) with 20. Naomi Prentice (Linwood, NY, York Central) led the way with 12 kills, followed by Compeau with 7. Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) assisted with 31 Highlander kills.

Every Highlanders touched the court in the match; an all-around team effort.

For the second match of the day, Houghton continued their winning streak against Allegheny. While keeping the Gators' points in the teens, Houghton was able to take a 3 set victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-17).

Burgher earned a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs. Wroblicky contributed with an impressive 28 digs, followed by Alyssa Quimby (Northglenn, CO, Community Christian) with 11. Coryell had 28 assists in the match.

Head coach Nancy Cole was very pleased by her team's performance, "Great play by the team today. They brought a lot of energy and consistency to the court."

Houghton looks forward to their next match on Thursday, October 16th where they will play away at SUNY Fredonia with a start time of 7pm.
