Hall of Honor
Joe Mason’s athletic story is one defined by courage, growth, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Joe did not begin his journey as a thrower until his junior year of high school at nearby Fillmore, when he made the bold decision to step away from baseball and try something entirely new.
Encouraged by his trusted teacher Kari Mancuso and supported by a group of friends, Joe discovered a natural fit in the shot put and discus. What began as curiosity quickly turned into passion, and by his senior year, Joe was breaking records and winning major meets—proof that sometimes the right path reveals itself only after a leap of faith.
After beginning his collegiate career at Alfred State and competing at multiple national championship meets, Joe felt there was still more to give. That belief led him back home to Houghton College, where he joined the Highlanders and immediately made his mark under the tutelage and mentorship of coach Bob Smalley. In his first indoor and outdoor meets, Joe broke school records—and then proceeded to reset them again and again.
Today, he still holds Houghton records in the outdoor discus, hammer, and shot put, as well as the indoor shot put and weight throw.
Beyond the marks and medals, Joe remembers most the people and the moments: competing alongside teammates who became lifelong friends, traveling to iconic venues like West Point, and finishing his collegiate career in front of family and friends on Houghton’s home track. He competed with humility, respect, and a deep sense of responsibility to represent Houghton with integrity—through his effort, his words, and his actions.
Joe’s impact extended far beyond competition. He was shaped by a tight-knit team culture rooted in hard work, faith, and fellowship, and by coaches who modeled calm leadership and Christian character. Those lessons carried seamlessly into life after athletics.
Following graduation, Joe pursued his calling in education. Now in his 18th year as an educator, he currently serves as a principal in Chesapeake, Virginia, after years as a classroom teacher and assistant principal. He has been recognized as Teacher of the Year, earned advanced graduate degrees, founded a long-standing outdoor ministry at his church, and serves as a deacon—all while being a devoted father to his son, Jesse.
Joe Mason’s legacy is not just written in record books, but in lives influenced, values lived out, and faith faithfully expressed. As he humbly reminds us, records are meant to be broken—but character endures.
It is with great pride and gratitude that we induct Joe Mason into the Houghton University Athletics Hall of Honor.
