One of the most distinguished coaches in New York State baseball history, Tom Kenney joined the Houghton baseball staff as an assistant coach in the fall of 2015.
Upon his retirement from Alfred State College in 2011, Kenney ranked 38th among active NJCAA coaches and 83rd among all-time NJCAA coaches in career wins with 648 over his 17-years at the helm of the Pioneers. A six-time NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year, Kenney posted a .661 winning percentage and averaged 38 wins per year.
Kenney's Pioneers won five Region III Championships, five Western New York Athletic Conference Championships, and one New York State Division I Conference Championship. His teams finished the NJCAA Top-10 in winning percentage three times.
During his term as head coach at Alfred State, Kenney's players notched 73 All-Conference Players, 58 All-Region Players, six All-Americans, and six players who went on to play in the professional ranks.
In additon to his coaching experience at Alfred State, Kenney has played a vital role in the establishment of Hornell Dodgers summer collegiate baseball team and the continued success of the New York Baseball League (NYCBL). Kenney served as the founder, president, general manager and head coach of the Dodgers from 1994-2006, during which time he won five Western Division championships and four NYCBL championships. The Dodgers are the longest continually operating franchise in the NYCBL.
During his tenure in Hornell Kenney coached 41 future professional players, six of whom played in the Major Leagues. He also coached an additional 25 professional players, including four Major Leaguers, as a coach for the Cohocton Red Wings (NYCBL). Â
In addition to his coaching experience, Kenney served as an Executive Board Member for the NYCBL. He has also been actively involved in his local community, coaching at various levels of baseball and basketball.
Coach Kenney graduated Magna Cum Laude from the State University of New York at Brockport with a degree in Physical Education and holds a New York State Permanent Teaching Certificate. He also earned his Master of Science in Physical Education from SUNY Brockport, and has taught in a variety of fields related to health, wellness, physical education and administration at both the high school and college levels.
While he holds a wealth of experience in all areas of baseball, Coach Kenney works primarily with the Houghton infielders and hitters.
He is the proud father of three children, and lives with his wife, Debbi, in Hornell, New York.
