ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Houghton University Highlanders softball team traveled to Hartwick College on Saturday for a conference doubleheader, coming away with a split after a pitching duel 2-1 win in the opener and an offensive explosion 15-7 loss in the nightcap.
Game 1: Houghton 2, Hartwick 1
The first game of the day was a controlled defensive battle dominated by Houghton's Kareena Ulfig. Ulfig tossed a complete-game gem, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out five over seven innings.
Houghton struck early in the top of the first when Kelley Burnett laced an RBI double to left field, scoring Phoebe Ruth who had reached on a single. The Highlanders added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Maggie Zastrow singled to left, bringing home Ulfig, who had doubled earlier in the frame.
Hartwick threatened late, scoring their lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a Nadia Pascucci RBI double. However, Ulfig remained composed, working through a final Hartwick hit in the seventh to secure the 2-1 victory.
Game 2: Hartwick 15, Houghton 7 (six innings)
The second game featured a completely different tempo, as the two teams combined for 22 runs and 24 hits. Hartwick's offense found its rhythm early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead through the first three innings, highlighted by a six-run third.
The Highlanders refused to go quietly, launching a comeback attempt in the fourth and fifth innings:
-
Fourth Inning: Houghton plated four runs, fueled by a two-RBI double from Angelina Tantillo and RBI singles from Burnett and Abigail Pitts.
-
Fifth Inning: Danielle Nelson crushed a two-run home run to left-center. An error later in the inning allowed Burnett to score, cutting the deficit to 10-7.
Despite the momentum shift, Hartwick slammed the door in the bottom of the sixth. A solo home run by Mihaly Blake sparked a five-run surge that ended the game via the run rule. Anna Klein earned the win for Hartwick, while Rebecca Oates took the loss for Houghton.
Next Up: Following the split, Houghton's record moves to 4-12 (1-7 E8) on the season. The Highlanders travel to Nazareth for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 15, with a 3 p.m. first game start.
