ONEONTA, N.Y. — Houghton men's volleyball dropped a pair of matches during a Saturday tri-match, falling to Elmira in four sets before coming up short in a five-set battle against Hartwick at Lambros Arena.
vs. Elmira (L, 3-1)
Houghton opened the day with a competitive four-set loss to Elmira (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22).
Jonah Sissel led the Highlanders with 12 kills on a .259 hitting percentage while adding a service ace.
Devin Cline followed with nine kills, two service aces, and three digs, while Timothy Murray delivered an efficient performance with seven kills on a .700 hitting percentage.
Michael McGlynn added six kills while hitting .417, and Jared Wright contributed four kills along with three total blocks (one solo, two assists).
Setter Jerry Buno directed the offense with 27 assists while adding five digs and a service ace.
Defensively, Ferron Mitchell led the Highlanders with six digs as Houghton totaled 25 digs in the match.
vs. Hartwick (L, 3-2)
In the second match, Houghton pushed Hartwick to five sets before falling 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 19-25, 15-9.
Jonah Sissel again led the attack with 13 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double.
Devin Cline recorded 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs, while Michael McGlynn added seven kills on an efficient .375 hitting percentage.
Jared Wright contributed seven kills and three total blocks, and Ferron Mitchell anchored the back row with 13 digs.
Setter Jerry Buno dished out 33 assists while adding five digs and two block assists.
As a team, Houghton recorded 51 kills and 47 digs, forcing a decisive fifth set after taking the fourth, but Hartwick pulled away late to secure the match.
