HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Despite competing with just five players, the Houghton University women's tennis team showed resilience and determination in a 4-3 victory over Lycoming College on Friday afternoon.
Due to a short lineup, the Highlanders were forced to concede matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. However, Houghton responded with a strong showing in doubles play to seize early momentum.
At No. 1 doubles, Victoria Martinez and Sage Brinckerhoff battled to a key victory, while Clancey Cockle and Angelina Miller secured the win at No. 2 doubles. By winning both contested matches, Houghton claimed the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Needing three singles victories to secure the match, the Highlanders delivered under pressure.
Sage Brinckerhoff earned an important point at No. 1 singles, while Clancey Cockle followed with a strong win at No. 2. With the match on the line, Abigail Lloyd came through in a pivotal moment, capturing the clinching victory at No. 5 singles to seal the 4-3 team win.
Despite conceding two positions by default, Houghton showcased grit, depth, and composure throughout the lineup.
