Highlanders Fall to Lions in AMCC Opening Match

ERIE, PA - Coming off a three-game weekend that saw the Highlanders earn their first win of the season, they turned their attention to their AMCC opening matchup against the PSU Behrend Lions. The Lions controlled the match on both sides of the ball, as the Highlanders struggled to find a rhythm. PSU Behrend secured a 3-0 sweep in the conference opener.

Recap:
After securing their first win of the season over the weekend, the Highlanders looked to build on that momentum as they opened AMCC conference play against the PSU Behrend Lions. Early struggles in the first set, including several attack errors, allowed the Lions to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Highlanders responded by winning several of the next points and cutting the deficit to one, but strong offense from the Lions-combined with unforced errors-shifted the momentum back in PSU Behrend's favor as they took set one, 25-15.
 
Set two saw the Highlanders get off to a stronger start, keeping the score withing reach early. However, the Lions applied pressure midway through the set, creating separation and eventually pulling away for a 25-10 win.
 
Facing a must-win third set, the Highlanders came out strong and claimed their first lead of the match at 8-5. A stretch of errors allowed the Lions to tie the set an regain the lead, but the Highlanders continued to battle, closing the gap to 16-14. PSU Behrend finished the set on a decisive 9-2 run to complete the 3-0 sweep.
 
Overall, the Lions controlled the match on both ends of the court, hitting .342 as a team while recording eight total blocks.

 
UP NEXT 
The Highlanders will have a few days to prepare before returning to action this weekend. They begin the trip on Friday with a 6:00pm matchup against SUNY Poly in Utica, NY. On Saturday, the team heads to Potsdam, NY, where they will face Bard College at 2:30pm before taking on host SUNY Potsdam at 5:00pm.
