After Heartbreaker in Opener, Women's Volleyball Salvages Split

HOUGHTON, NY – After dropping a five-set heartbreaker to the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils in the opening match of the day, the Houghton Highlanders bounced back in the nightcap, defeating the Carlow Celtics in straight sets.

Recap:
After leading, 2-1, the Highlanders fought back from a 20-14 deficit, eventually tying the game, 24-24.  But two straight Houghton attack errors gave the Blue Devils the tying set, forcing a pivotal fifth set.
 
In the final set, the Highlanders jumped out to a commanding lead early, and led, 10-6, before Fredonia began to claw back into contention, eventually taking the final set, 15-13, on a dramatic kill by Hannah Lombardi.

Recap:
Double-digit kills and seven service aces propelled the Highlanders past Carlow in straight sets.
 
After trailing, 21-22, late in the opener, Houghton reeled off four straight points to take a 1-0 lead.
 
In the second set, the Highlanders took advantage of 15 kills, and again fought back from a late deficit to take a 2-0 lead in another closely contested game, 25-22.
 
The third set looked nearly identical, and the Highlanders again pulled away late for a 25-20 victory to win the match in three straight sets.

NOTABLE STATS
>> Alexa Belanger tallied a career-best 26 kills in the opening match, and added nine more in the second match of the day.  Belanger also collected 25 total digs on the day.  Teammate Emma Cole racked up 28 total kills and nine blocks.
 
>> Logan Baer also reach a new career benchmark with 43 assists in game one, before tacking on 31 more against Carlow.
 
>> Natalie Rivera posted a career-high 36 digs against Fredonia, then added nine more in the second game.
 
UP NEXT
The Highlanders return to the Nielsen Center on Wednesday, October 1, when they will host Empire 8 rival Alfred University at 7:00 p.m.
