Fay Nets Two to Lead Highlanders to Win over Fredonia

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- James Fay produced his second two-goal game of the season to lead Houghton men's soccer to a 2-1 win over Fredonia on Burke Field on Tuesday night.

The Highlanders got on the board in the 13th minute after a Sam Edwards run toward the left touchline. Edwards played the ball in to Fay who took a quick shot that slipped just between the left post and the Fredonia keeper. The visiting Blue Devils found the equalizer in the 26th minute and the score would remain tied for the next 30 minutes. But that's when Fay would strike again, taking advantage of a defensive turnover. The sophomore intercepted an attempted clearance by the keeper at the top of the box, took a quick move to the right around the keeper and sent a shot into the upper 90 from 10 yards out.

Fredonia finished the contest with a 12-5 shots advantage, but the Houghton defense tightened to limit dangerous scoring opportunities, and keeper Joshua Smith went the distance in net, making three saves.

Corners were 3-0 in favor of the Devils.

Fay finished with three shots (all on goal) and now leads the team with four goals on the season.

Houghton returns to Empire 8 play on Saturday, September 27 when they travel to take on the Alfred Saxons at 1 p.m.
