Women's Soccer Takes Down Buffalo State, 4-1

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- It was bound to end at some point. After 504 minutes of play stretching across the first six games of the season, Houghton women's soccer finally conceded its first goal of the campaign in a 4-1 victory over Buffalo State on Wednesday at Burke Field.

The Highlanders got goals from four different players on the night, jumping out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and building the margin to 4-0 just seconds into the second half. The Bengals added their lone goal in the 54th minute.

Karryne Mims opened the scoring for Houghton in the sixth minute, with Elena Esh and Hope Russell rounding out the first half goal outburst with tallies in the 22nd and 30th minutes. As the second half opened, the Highlanders quickly pushed the ball deep into the Buffalo State end and earned a PK on a foul just inside the box. Freshman Gracelyn Williams calmly slotted the ball low and right past the keeper to push the advantage to 4-0.

After the Bengals tallied its goal, Houghton kept up its attack and just missed on two more scoring opportunities. Hope Russell blasted a shot off the left post in the 70th minute before Aivery Shuck ripped a shot from 18 yards eight minutes later that forced the Bengals keeper into a diving stop.

Russell finished with a team-high four shots (three on goal). Williams, Shuck and Sophia Templeton each tallied assists.

Preslee Miller stopped five shots in 90 minutes of action to get the win in goal.

It was just the second win for Houghton against Buffalo State over the last seven matchups (2-3-2). The Highlanders had been winless against the Bengals over their last three contests (0-2-1)

The Highlanders now turn their attention to Empire 8 opponent Utica. They will battle at Utica on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m.
