BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Houghton softball earned a two-game split with Brockport on the road Tuesday in Empire 8 action.
The Highlanders lost the opener 3-0 before rallying for a 3-2 win in eight innings in game two.
Despite rapping out eight hits in game one, the Houghton offensive never got clicking. The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first innings and another run in the third, and that was enough to claim the win.
Olivia Carr and Kareen Ulfig led the Highlanders with two hits apiece. Carr and
Sarah McArthur each had doubles.
Ulfig had a strong outing on the mound, going the distance, allowing three runs on five hits.
In the second game, it took eight innings for the Highlanders to earn the win. After Brockport went up 2-0 with two runs in the first, Houghton rallied.
Danielle Nelson drove in
Olivia Carr with a single in the third inning, then
Rebecca Oates scored the tying run on a fielder's choice just one inning later.
Each team went scoreless the next three innings, but it was the Highlanders who responded offensively as the game went to extra innings. A walk, an error and a single loaded the bases for the Highlanders with just one out. The hosts almost scored the go-ahead run with
Sarah McArthur at the plate, but Pitts was thrown out at home on the fielder's choice for the second out. It was Ulfig was the offensive hero as she lined a single to left field that brought
Hannah Fish home with the go-ahead run.
Brockport was able to get a one-out triple to threaten in the bottom of the eighth, but pitched
Olivia Carr forced a line our and ground out to close the game.
Carr went the distance, allowing two runs on 11 hits and striking out four batters.
Ulfig finished with four hits for Houghton.
