HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball tallied its seventh win of the season after splitting a home twinbill with Elmira on Saturday.
Houghton took game one, 10-3, before falling in the second game by a 7-1 count.
After the games, the team recognized the contributions of departing seniors
Olivia Carr,
Breona Jones and
Adelynn Killian.
After conceding a run in the top of the first, the Highlanders scored four times in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not give up. Run-scoring doubles by
Kelley Burnett and
Rebecca Oates highlighted the big inning.
Elmira would score a run apiece in the second and fourth innings, but the Highlanders responded with a run in the fourth and closed it out with five scores in the fifth.
It was a balanced display for the home team, who got hits from eight different players, led by two each from Burnett and Oates. Olvia Carr,
Sarah McArthur and
Hannah Fish each scored two runs.
Ulfig was in control on the mound, going all five innings while allowing three runs on 10 hits, striking out two and walking one.
"We jumped right from the start offensively. We caused a pitching change right away for their team and put the pressure on," said Head Coach
Olivia Kincanon. "Our bats really came alive, and the dominance I know this team is capable of really came through. Kareena held her own on the mound and our defense really showed up. I'm very proud of the all around team effort."
The momentum didn't continue into the nightcap as it was the Soaring Eagles who took control early and shut down the Houghton hitters. Elmira scored four times in the first two innings and closed the game with three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Houghton's only run came off a SAC fly from
Kareena Ulfig in the fourth. The Highlanders had just four hits in the contest.
Abigail Pitts started on the mound, but gave up three runs on two hits and two walks before she could record an out.
Olivia Carr came on and went seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. She also struck out four batters.
"Olivia pitched great," said Kincanon. "We need to be a little more consistent in our offense and make adjustments quicker, but overall we played pretty strong. Our next mission, is preparing for Brockport."
The Highlanders travel to take on Brockport on Tuesday, April 29.
