HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton Athletics is currently ranked No. 5 in the Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup standings after the winter 2024-25 season.
Houghton moved up one position after sitting in sixth after the fall seasons.
"I continue to be proud of our athletes and coaches for our level of competitiveness in the Empire 8," said Houghton Director of Athletics Matthew Webb. "As our athletes continue to excel in the classroom they are also competing at a high level on the court, track, and field."
Houghton currently has a composite score of 0.515 after a winter that saw women's basketball (sixth place finish) and men's basketball (seventh place) each advance to the E8 tournament. Men's and women's indoor track and field each finished sixth at the conference championship meet.
Geneseo currently leads the rankings, with Brockport, Nazareth and St. John Fisher rounding out the top four.
Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 conference standings at the completion of the regular season and post-season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). A team's regular season finish will be added to its post-season finish and divided by two for the final total for that sport.
Teams tied for a position in the regular season standings are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual number of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine their overall percentage.
