Highlanders Sweep Grove City in Dramatic Fashion

Cetton Breaks Career Wins Record

GROVE CITY, PA— Ethan Cetton established a new program wins record in a game-one, and the Houghton Highlanders pulled off an incredible comeback win in the second game with seven runs in the top of the sixth before the game was called due to darkness, as they completed a doubleheader sweep of the Grove City College Wolverines, 6-2 and 14-12.

GAME #1
Ethan Cetton picked up his 14th career victory, passing former teammate, Ryan Newtown, for the all-time Houghton lead, going six innings, while allowing only two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks, while striking out three.

After Grove City scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead, Houghton responded in the top of the fourth when Christian Tortorici ripped a bases-clearing double to right-center, giving the Highlanders all the run support they would eventually need.

In the top of the seventh, a Ty Kenney double scored Nate Hall, and Jeremiah Chow followed with a single to score Kenney, tacking on two much-needed insurance runs.

Daniel Allard would close the door on Cetton's behalf in the bottom of the seventh with a scoreless inning.

GAME #2
With the skies darkening, and the Wolverines leading, 12-7, heading into the top of the sixth inning, the Highlanders knew they were running out of time.

Following a Jeremiah Chow lead-off walk, Qingyang Feng smoked a line drive that the second baseman snared and nearly doubled-off Chow at first.

After back-to-back hit-by-pitches to Vincent Lucyszyn and Tortorici, Ian Slate lifted a fly ball to centerfield to score Chow.  Two outs.

The next six Houghton batters would reach base on four hits and a pair of walks, capped by a two-RBI base hit by Feng to put the Highlanders up by two.

Following a short debate with the officials over whether to call the game due to darkness, which would have reverted to the score of the previous inning, handing Houghton a loss after their miraculous comeback, both teams agreed to give Grove City the opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the sixth.

After a leadoff base hit, Houghton's Nate Tyler settled inducing a weak flare to right, a pop up back to the mound, and a game-ending ground ball to second base.

COACH'S CORNER:
"Today's wins were gratifying on so many different levels.  To start, I'm excited for Ethan [Cetton].  Not only did he claim the wins-record, but he started last year's Grove City game. That was our worst game of the year, and probably his worst outing of the year.  Ethan's a tremendous pitcher, and I'm incredibly proud that he had the opportunity to redeem that game for himself and for our team.

"Grove City is a very good program with an excellent coach.  They've won 27 games or more each of the past five full seasons, and they already have some quality wins under their belt.  They'll make some noise this year, but our guys approached these games the right way.  We weren't intimidated, and we never backed down.

"We put together a good win in game one.  In game two, that was not a pretty win; but, like I told our team after the game, good teams find ways to win, and we did exactly that.  We displayed tremendous grit and determination.  We ground out at bats all day long.  In 13 innings of play we saw 324 pitches. That's nearly 25 pitches per inning.  That's incredible.

"We scored seven runs in the last inning, when it was tough to see, all with two outs.  I am fairly speechless.  I'm just incredibly proud of and for our guys right now.

UP NEXT:
The Highlanders return to the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex next Friday and Saturday for their conference-opening series against the Alfred Saxons.  First pitch on Friday is slated for 4:00 p.m.
