PITTSFORD, NY – Two-time reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year, Sidney Tomasso, teamed up with Katie Moravec to score a combined 44 points, leading the St. John Fisher Cardinals over the Houghton Highlanders in the quarterfinal round of the conference championship, 72-55.
Tomasso scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, logging all 40 minutes on the court, while Moravec added 21 points and eight boards.
The Cardinals came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, knocking down 10-of-19 shots (56 percent) in the first quarter, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, as they built a 24-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The Houghton defense tightened up in the second quarter, as the teams played to an 11-11 draw, but Fisher still took a nine-point advantage into the half.
The third quarter proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back, as Fisher held the Highlanders to only 26 percent shooting, and 0-for-5 from long distance. The Cardinals stretched their lead to 17 points, and the Highlanders never recovered.
