Men's Soccer Closes Season with Loss at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Houghton men's soccer finished the 2025 fall campaign with a 6-2 loss on the road at Elmira on Wednesday afternoon.

The teams played evenly throughout the first half, each creating numerous chances in the attacking third, but neither team could find the back of the net. Much of that could be owed to outstanding play by the starting goalkeepers for each team. Houghton keeper Joshua Smith stopped five shots in the first half, while Elmira keeper Juan Carlos Cruz Gandia made nine first half stops. Elmira outshot Houghton 11-10 over the first 45 minutes.

While the story of the first half was stellar defensive play, the final 45 minutes showcased offensive firepower. The teams combined for eight second half goals, with the Soaring Eagles breaking the stalemate in the 48th minute before Eben Schilke tied it right back up seven minutes later. The hosts would then score four-straight to take a 5-1 advantage. Nata Souza pulled the Highlanders closer with a tally in the 87th minute, but the Eagles would tack another on just two minutes later to finish it off.

Smith finished with eight saves in 84 minutes of action. Stephen McLamb came for the final six minutes, allowing one goal.

Shots were 24-18 in favor of Elmira. John Fay led Houghton with six shots.

Houghton wraps their season with a 4-12-1 record and a 2-8-1 mark in the Empire 8.
