HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton Athletics finished the 2023-24 year in fourth place in the final Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup standings.
It's the fourth time overall (2019-20, 2020-21, 2022-23), and second straight, that the department has finished in fourth place.
Houghton wrapped up the year with a composite score of 0.541 after a spring that saw men's tennis capture E8 regular season and tournament championships, baseball advance to the E8 tournament and fifth place finishes by both men's and women's outdoor track.
Prior to the spring, Houghton earned key points on the strength of a runner-up finish in women's basketball and fourth place finishes in men's and women's indoor track and field in addition to the 2023 E8 Men's Cross Country title in the fall. The Highlanders also got key points from men's basketball after a post-season appearance and sixth-place conference finish.
St. John Fisher University claimed its fifth-straight title, followed by Nazareth and Utica.
Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 conference standings at the completion of the regular season and post-season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). A team's regular season finish will be added to its post-season finish and divided by two for the final total for that sport.
Teams tied for a position in the regular season standings are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual number of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine their overall percentage.
