HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- St. John Fisher proved why they continue to dwell at the top of the Empire 8 Conference as they downed Houghton softball in two games on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals won both games in five innings, 16-5 and 10-0.
Houghton actually jumped on the Cardinals early in game one. The Highlanders got three runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two RBI single by
Keri Wesneski and a run by
Jennifer Page on Cardinals fielding error. That lead didn't last long, however, as the Cardinals scored three times in the third, three more in the fourth and finished it off with a 10-run fifth. Houghton was able to string together four hits in the bottom of the fifth and plated two more runs for the final margin.
Jennifer Page,
Kareena Ulfig and
Victoria Quintana each singled, while
Rachel Scharf roped a double to center field. Scharf's and Quintana's hits each drove in a run.
Ulfig got the start in the circle, going 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.
Olivia Carr came on late and allowed 10 runs on seven hits.
The nightcap didn't produce much offense for the Highlanders as the hosts were held to just a single by
Danielle Nelson.
The Cardinals finished with 11 hits, including five doubles and a homer, scoring runs in the first (4), third (1) and fourth innings (5).
Keri Wesneski allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings.
Houghton is back in action Saturday, hosting E8 foe Alfred in a doubleheader.
