Softball Drops Doubleheader to Alfred

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball faced its second-straight test against one of the stronger teams in the E8, losing twice to Alfred at home on Saturday.

The Saxons took game one, 14-0, in five innings and closed the day with a 9-2 win over the Highlanders.

Highlander batters spread six hits over the five innings in the opener, led by a 2 for 2 performance from Adelynn Killian. Kareena Ulfig allowed nine runs on 11 hits in four innings. Alisabeth Crandall came on in relief, with a one inning stint where she allowed five runs on five hits. The biggest damage by Alfred came in the final inning when they exploded for eight runs on eight hits.

In game two, the Saxons belted five extra base hits, including two homeruns, to claim the 9-2 win. The visitors spread their runs throughout the contest, scoring single runs in the second and third inning, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh. The Highlanders were able to score twice in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring. The runs came off the bat of Chyanne Bushyhead, who doubled home Rachel Scharf and Keri Wesneski. Two of Houghton's four hits were doubles, with Bushyhead and Scharf each getting credit for one.

Olivia Carr went the distance in the circle, allowing nine runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

The Highlanders will wrap up their regular season with a two-game road matchup with Elmira on Tuesday, April 30.
