Softball Opens Conference Slate with Split at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Houghton softball picked up its sixth win of the season with a doubleheader split with Nazareth in E8 action on Tuesday.

The Golden Flyers won the first game 12-4 in six innings, but Houghton rebounded with a 4-3 victory in the night cap.

In the opener, the Highlanders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning and looked to be on their way to a win. However, the hosts would go on to score 12 unearned runs, including the game-ending two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth. Danielle Nelson led the offense with two hits (double), a stolen base and an RBI. Lydia Peterson added a triple and Jennifer Page had a double for the Houghton attack. Olivia Carr allowed nine runs on 10 hits in four innings, with Alisabeth Crandall allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. The two pitchers combined for four strikeouts and walked just two.

The Highlanders got a strong performance in the circle from freshman Kareena Ulfig in game two. The hurler went the full seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out four and walking none. Houghton's offense staked Ulfig to a 3-0 lead, with two runs coming in the third and another in the fourth. Keri Wesneski and Nelson each rapped RBI singles in the fourth, with Page scoring the run in the fourth.

A two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth pulled the hosts to 3-2, but the Highlanders regained their two-run cushion just an inning later. A Page singled, following by a stolen base and two walks put a runner into scoring position. And Page came home on a ground out by Adelynn Killian to make the score 4-2.

Nazareth would lead off the bottom half of the sixth with solo homer, but Ulfig retired the next six Golden Flyer batters to secure the one-run victory.

Page finished with two hits and two runs. Killian, Hailie Mathews (double), Nelson, and Carlee Miller each had hits. Page (2), Nelson and Peterson each stole a base.

Houghton (6-13-1; 1-1 E8) returns to action for another conference tilt when they travel to take on the Elmira Soaring Eagles on Friday, April 12 at 3 and 5 p.m.
