Softball Splits Home Doubleheader with Brockport

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball returned home for a mid-week doubleheader with Brockport on Tuesday, splitting the two-game series in front of the home crowd.

The Highlanders opened with a 4-2 loss, before closing the day with a convincing 9-4 victory.

In the opener, each team scored twice in the opening inning. Houghton got an RBi single from Danielle Nelson, and Jennifer page drove in Nelson with a sac bunt.

Brockport scored the winning run in the top of the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth. The hosts threatened in the fourth and the sixth, but couldn't drive in the runners who had gotten into scoring position.

Houghton finished the game with six hits, led by Nelson's 3 for 3 performance. Kareena Ulfig went the distance on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three.

In the nightcap, Houghton jumped to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third, but Brockport responded to tie the game up in the top of the fourth. That rally was short-lived, however, as the Highlanders got the game winning run, and a couple more for good measure, to push the lead to 7-3 after four innings of play. Keri Wesneski had the only hit of the inning, an RBI single that drove in Trinity Copeland, but the hosts took advantage of three walks, a wild pitch and two batters hit by a pitch.

Carlee Miller continued her tear in the bottom of the fifth, belting her second solo homer in the past two days to push the lead to 8-3, and Adelynn Killian added an RBI single to make it 9-3.

Brockport scored its final run in the top of the seventh.

Ulfig and Wesneski (two doubles) each had two hits to lead the Highlanders. MIller walked three times in addition to her homer and scored three runs.

Alisabeth Crandall allowed two runs on four hits of 3.1 innings. Olivia Carr came on in relief, going 3.2 innings, striking out five and allowing two runs on four hits.

Houghton doesn't get much of a break as they head out on the road for a doubleheader vs. SUNY Delhi on Wednesday at 3 and 5 p.m.
