Highlanders Close Southern Swing with Pair of Losses

AUBURNDALE, FL — The Houghton Highlanders dropped two games on their final day in the Sunshine State, falling to Rose-Hulman, 12-5, in the morning opening, and Concordia-Chicago, 14-1, in the afternoon.

Game 1:
Kade Kline collected five hits and hit for the cycle, leading the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers past the Houghton Highlanders, 12-5.
 
The Engineers scored in each of the first four frames, plating 11 runs on nine hits and eight walks over that span.
 
Houghton's Nate Tyler quieted the Rose-Hulman attack, pitching 4.1 innings of relief, allowing only one run on five hits, while striking out three.
 
The Highlanders plated three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but left a total of 15 runners on base, as they could not overcome the early deficit.
 
Game 2: 
The Concordia-Chicago Cougars scored in every inning but the first, knocking off the Highlanders in seven innings, 14-1. 
 
The Cougars roped out 12 hits, including two homeruns and three doubles, and took advantage of six Houghton errors in the win.
 
Houghton managed only three hits off five Concordia pitchers, two of which did not leave the infield.
 
KEY STATS:
>> Houghton collected 13 hits against Rose-Hulman, including multi-hit efforts from Ian Slate (three hits, double), Nate Hall (two hits, double), Chris VanCheri (two hits) and Dylan Boprey (two hits).  Jeremey Wilcox delivered his first career home run.
 
>> At the end of the Florida swing, Hall leads the Highlanders in batting average (.333), slugging percentage (.458) and on-base percentage (.500)

The Highlanders return to the friendly confines of the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex on Tuesday, March 5, when they will play their home opener against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Panthers at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.
