HOUGHTON, NY— One year ago the Elmira Soaring Eagles knocked off the higher-seeded Houghton Highlanders in the opening round of the Empire 8 Conference Championship, 65-58.
From the opening tip of tonight's rematch, the Highlanders played with a ferocity that demonstrated that another upset would not happen tonight, as Houghton claimed the first-round victory, 71-43.
Tabitha DeVries put the Highlanders on the board early, and
Hannah Siewert, in only her second start of the year, knocked down three straight layups to give Houghton some early momentum. While the Soaring Eagles kept pace in the opening minutes, Houghton shot nearly 63 percent from the floor in the first quarter, building a resounding, 22-9 lead, over the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter brought more of the same, as the Highlanders shared the scoring wealth, eventually heading to the locker room with a commanding, 39-17 advantage.
Elmira made a brief run in the third, putting together a stretch in which they drained three consecutive threes, outpacing the Highlanders, 18-15, over the third 10-minute stretch. But Houghton regained form in the final quarter, putting the Soaring Eagles away with a 17-8 performance to seal the win.

COACH'S CORNER
"We had everyone locked in and ready to go today. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that our group showed up ready to go from the jump.
"I'm very proud of everything this group has accomplished, but I think everyone in the room knows it's not done yet. When we come locked in and ready to compete from top to bottom, this team is just flat-out fun to watch.
"I can't wait to compete with this group again tomorrow at practice as we prepare for our trip to Rochester on Thursday. It's going to be a fun challenge that we will be ready for." –Head Coach
