HOUGHTON, NY – Kayla Camacho and Tabitha DeVries scored 21 points apiece, as the Houghton Highlanders kicked off the 2024-25 season with a victory over the visiting Alfred State Pioneers, 77-45.
 
The Highlanders opened the game hot, outscoring the Pioneers, 20-8 over the first 10 minutes, as DeVries knocked down four of her first five shots.
 
Alfred State bounced back in the second quarter, edging Houghton 16-15, as the two teams went to the locker rooms with a 35-24 Houghton lead.
 
The second half belonged to the Highlanders.  Houghton forced 16 Alfred State turnovers, and limited the Pioneers to only 17 percent shooting over the final 10 minutes.

>> Houghton shot over 40 percent from the field, while Alfred State knocked down 26 percent of their shots.  The Highlanders also held a 16-to-25 advantage in turnovers.
 
>> Camacho finished 9-of-16 from the floor.  Only one game into her third season with the Highlanders, she now has 698 career points.
 
>> DeVries went 8-for-17 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.  She also collected seven rebounds. The 21 points was a career high for the sophomore.
 
>> Tricia Carmer pulled down seven boards and dished out seven assists, while Crysta LaCrosse also posted seven assists.

The Highlanders travel to Delhi on Tuesday, November 12 to challenge the SUNY Delhi Broncos at 5:30 p.m.  Houghton has won each of the last four meetings between the teams by an average of 48.5 points.
