Field Hockey Closes Season with Tournament Loss to Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY – Jessica Betts scored three goals as the Hartwick Hawks ended the Houghton Highlanders' season for the third time in as many years, and the fourth time in the past five, 4-1.

Betts put the Hawks on the board only two minutes into the game, picking the pocket of the last Houghton defender and sliding a quick shot past the Houghton keeper.

Hartwick would put up three more goals over the next 20 minutes, taking a 4-0 lead into the half without allowing a single Houghton shot.

Just over a minute-and-a-half into the second half, Deborah Cross received the insert at the top of the circle off a Houghton penalty stroke.  Cross passed to Jace Hunzinger on the right side, who slid a perfect pass to Ava Kramp, who deposited her third goal of the season into the back of the cage.

That, however, would be as close as the Highlanders would come, as the score remained 4-1 for the remainder of the half.

>> The Highlanders finished second in the Empire 8 in overall team scoring (59 goals, 3.28 gpg) and conference team scoring (34 goals, 3.78 gpg).

>> Senior Jace Hunzinger led the Highlanders with 31 total points, including a team-best 14 goals and four assists.  Hunzinger, who led the NCAA in assists per game in both 2022 and 2023, leaves the field as the Highlanders' and the Empire 8's all-time assist leader (55).  She also finished fifth on the Houghton career leader board in goals (36) and second in points (127).

>> Senior Bekah Davie, who led the Highlanders in goals each of the past two seasons, finished second on the team in goals scored (11) and tied for second in total points (24).  On October 12 at Utica, Davie netted her 55th career goal to become the new all-time Houghton leader in goals scored.  She finished her career with 56 goals, and ranks third all-time with 119 career points.
