HOUGHTON, NY – Ana Gutman pounded out 14 of St. John Fisher's 40 kills, as the Cardinals outpaced the Houghton Highlanders in three straight sets on Friday night.
After the Cardinals won the opening set, 25-18, the Highlanders rallied in the second set, hanging within two-to-three points throughout. With Fisher leading, 24-21, back-to-back errors by the Cardinals pulled Houghton within a point, but a kill by Lydia Fraser finished the set for Fisher.
In the final set the highlanders clung to a slim, 12-11 lead, before the Cardinals reeled off four straight points, giving them a three-point cushion and enough momentum to propel them to the straight-set victory.
