PITTSFORD, NY – In a battle of two of the three remaining Empire 8 women's basketball unbeatens, the St. John Fisher Cardinals prevailed, 65-49, handing the Houghton Highlanders their first conference, and overall, loss of the season.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early eight-point advantage in the first quarter, but the Cardinals battled back to within a point before entering the second 10 minutes.
After the two teams battled to a 30-30 tie with only three minutes to go before the half, Fisher sank three straight baskets to head to the locker room up by six.
The third quarter belonged to the Cardinals, as they Highlanders went cold from the field, hitting only 2-of-20 shots, as Fisher expanded their lead to 16 points.
Houghton battled back in the final quarter, cutting the lead to single digits on a
Trinity Copeland layup. But the Cardinals responded with an 11-1 run, and the Highlanders never challenged again.
