The Men's and Women's Tennis teams for Houghton University took on SUNY Oneonta, Tuesday afternoon but could not prevail against a tough Red Dragrons program. Despite both teams playing well, the women would fall 9-0 and the men would lose their first match of the year 7-2.
The two winners of the afternoon for the men came from incoming freshman, Preston Tobolski and Caleb Hilsher. Tobolski would come back from a set down in the fourth singles position to earn his first collegiate win with a thrilling 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory in the third set tiebreaker. At sixth singles, Hilsher would pocket his first collegiate win with a hard fought 7-6(3), 6-4 win to close out the evening on a strong note.
"I am very proud of how our Highlanders competed this afternoon against a strong Oneonta program," Head Coach
Zach Shilvock said post match. "I thought our ladies competed really well today and I am proud of the effort they showed from the first point till the last. For the men, I am so happy that Caleb and Preston were able to earn their first college wins by decisively closing out their matches. I am proud of Jonas as well, and I know his first college win is in the horizon as well. I am proud of these young guys for stepping up in this match today!"
The Ladies will get back into Empire 8 action Friday afternoon against Hartwick, and the men will close out their Fall season at Oswego this coming Saturday at 1pm.
