Houghton to Honor Legacies of Three Former Athletes

Forty-two years ago, the Houghton community was devastated when a tragic accident claimed the lives of six young Houghton student leaders.

While the impact was felt across campus, three of those lost that day had also made a special impact as Highlander student-athletes.

Al Bushart (men's soccer), Joy Ellis (volleyball) and Cynthia Rudes (volleyball) left an indelible mark on our programs and continue to be remembered with fondness on campus and among their former teammates and coaches.
All six students were honored with the Soaring Eagles Statue outside the Campus Center, but now we are pleased to specifically honor Al, Joy and Cynthia within the Department of Athletics.

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, the department will unveil a display in the Kerr-Pegula Field House MVP Room commemorating the impact and legacy of these three Highlanders. The display will include Bushart's Houghton jersey and will recognize the creation of the Joy Ellis & Cynthia Rudes Women's Volleyball Endowment fund.

We would like to invite family members, former teammates, coaches and friends to join us for the event, which will begin at Noon in the MVP Room, followed by a buffet luncheon in the Field House. Guests are welcome to stay for the women's volleyball match vs. Nazareth University (2 p.m. start) in the Nielsen Center and the men's soccer game vs. Hartwick at 3 p.m. on Burke Field.

Those interested in attending the luncheon may purchase tickets online by Friday, October 6:
