Baseball Drops Two at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, PA — The Allegheny Gators scored seven runs in the first inning of game one, in route to a 12-1 victory, before coming from behind in the bottom of the sixth to take game two, 4-2, to sweep the visiting Houghton Highlanders on Thursday afternoon.

Game 2 Score: Houghton – 2 | Allegheny – 4

Venue: Robertson Athletic Complex, Allegheny College | Attendance:55/55

Game 1:
Tyson Bryant-Dawson led of the game with a homerun to left, propelling the Gators to a seven-run first inning.

That would be all the help Allegheny starter Brent Hermann would need, tossing six innings and allowing only four hits and one walk for the victory.

Houghton's lone run would come in the fourth, when Ian Slate singled home Chris VanCheri.

Game 2:
Ian Slate broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth with a seeing-eye-single through the right side of the infield, scoring Chris VanCheri to put the Highlanders up, 2-1.

The Gators, however, responded in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off hit-by-pitch, a single to shortstop, and a sacrifice bunt attempt that plated two runs thanks to a Houghton throwing error on the play.

Allegheny would then hit back-to-back doubles to extend their lead to 4-2.

Davis Mcmillan led off the top of the seventh with a double off the centerfield wall, but Houghton failed to rally further.

COACH'S CORNER:
"We played much better in the second game, thanks in large part to another stellar pitching performance by Ryan Newtown.  It was disappointing to see him pick up the loss after throwing so well because of couple of miscues on our part.

"We have work to do offensively and defensively.  My hope is that the break will give our guys some much-needed rest and help us refocus as we head into the home stretch of our season." – Head Coach Brian Reitnour

UP NEXT:
The Highlanders will take a few days off for Easter weekend, before traveling to Penn State-Du Bois on Monday for a doubleheader at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.
