UTICA, NY— The Utica Pioneers broke open a 1-1 game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take the lead, then added four more in the sixth to secure a win in the opening game of a three-game set against the Houghton Highlanders.
Houghton grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth after a lead-off walk to
Zach Parr and singles from
Ian Slate and Davis Mcmillan.
Utica tied the game in the bottom of the inning when, with runners on first and third and one out, they attempted a double steal.
Chris VanCheri threw the runner from first out at second, but the runner knocked the Houghton second baseman over, allowing the runner from third to score the tying run.
With two outs in the fifth, a wild pitch allowed a Utica runner to advance from first to second, followed by a loping fly ball to left that landed just out of the reach of the Houghton left-fielder. Back-to-back doubles and a seeing-eye-single up the middle plated to more runs to put the Pioneers up, 4-1.
A bases loaded triple in the sixth, followed by another seeing-eye-single through the left side, would push four more runs across for the Pioneers, again all with two outs, to bolster their lead to 8-1.
Utica would add an insurance run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles.

COACH'S CORNER:
"I know it's cliché, but I really felt like the game was much closer than the score indicates. Ethan [Cetton] did a nice job of keeping their hitters off balance and inducing weak contact, right up until the end.
"Utica did an excellent job of battling with two outs, and even two strikes, and simply putting the ball where we weren't. They hit a few balls hard in key situations… and we didn't.
"Offensively we'll need to put together some better at bats tomorrow in order to stay competitive, but I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond." – Head Coach
Brian Reitnour
