BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Houghton softball split a doubleheader with Medaille University on Friday, winning 1-0 in game one before losing 2-1 in game two.
Game 1
It was a defensive and pitching battle all game. The Highlanders scored the only run of the game in the top of the seventh with an Elise Swanson single, scoring Lydia Peterson. That one run was enough to take the Highlanders to their seventh victory of the season and their first conference victory.
Houghton was led by Lydia Peterson and Chyanne Bushyhead. Peterson had three hits and Bushyhead had two.
Kayla Loomis went the distance for all seven innings, getting her fifth win of the season. Loomis allowed only two hits, no runs, with no walks, and five strikeouts.
Game 2
Houghton came out swinging, scoring the first in the top of the first inning. Carlee Miller singled to left center, scoring Chyanne Bushyhead. The defense stayed strong for a strong battle. The Mavericks were able to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Highlanders were unable to come back and took the 2-1 loss in game two.
Jennifer Burrows pitched all six innings for the Highlanders. She allowed eight hits, two runs, with no walks, and one strikeout on the day.
The Highlanders are back in action for more conference play at Keuka College on Saturday, April 15 for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
