HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Houghton softball took two games over Hilbert College to get their fifth and sixth wins of the season. The Highlanders won 6-5 in game one before winning 11-1 in a five inning game two.
Kayla Loomis went the distance in game one before Alisabeth Crandall got the start in game two and Jennifer Burrows came out to close it in the bottom of the fifth.
Game 1
The Highlanders came out strong and scored first in the top of the first. Chyanne Bushyhead singled to left field, scoring Lydia Peterson. The Hawks answered and tied it up at one in the bottom half of the first inning.
Houghton took the lead in the top of the third with a Danielle Nelson double, scoring Bushyhead. The Hawks took their only lead of the day in the bottom of the third, bringing the score to 3-2.
In the top of the fourth inning, Bushyhead got her fifth home run of the season, giving the Highlanders a 5-3 edge, but the Hawks tied it up at five in the bottom of the fourth.
The Highlanders secured the win in the seventh inning with a Bushyhead single, scoring Hannah Chorey.
Loomis went all seven innings, allowing 12 hits, three earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Game 2
The Highlanders came out swinging to score two in the first inning with an Elise Swanson double and a Carlee Miller single. The Hawks cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, taking the score to 2-1.
In the top of the second, the Highlanders scored another run with a Lydia Peterson single to score Kailey Miller. The Highlanders had a strong fourth inning, scoring five runs. Jennifer Page, Lydia Peterson, Hannah Chorey, and Elise Swanson put together some singles to bring in the runs. The Highlanders capitalized on their lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to expand their lead to 11-1. The Hawks could not get their bats going which resulted in a sweep for the Highlanders.
Crandall pitched four of the five innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs, no walks, and two strikeouts. Burrows closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth, allowing two hits and no runs.
The Highlanders are back in action for more conference play at Medaille University on Friday, April 14 for a doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m.
