Softball Wins Third-Straight With Offensive Outburst

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Houghton softball kept the wins coming with their third win of the season, 15-8, against Oswego on Tuesday afternoon. 

Kayla Loomis pitched six strong innings before Alisabeth Crandall came in to close the game out in the seventh inning. Loomis had 6 walks and 3 strikeouts in this outing. 

Game 1

The Highlanders came out swinging in the first inning and putting up four runs to take an early lead. The Lakers responded and put up two runs in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the third, the game was tied up at four. 

In the top of the fourth, the Highlanders loaded the bases for a Carlee Miller RBI walk and a Chyanne Bushyhead single, to bring the Highlanders back in the lead, 6-4. But the Lakers did not give up and scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 7-6. 

The Highlanders put up two strong innings in the 5th and 6th. It started with a three run RBI double for Elise Swanson, followed by a two run dinger from Chyanne Bushyhead to bring the score to 12-7. The Highlanders capitalized on their lead in the 6th from another Elise Swanson double. 

The score was 15-7 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Lakers put up one run before the Highlanders closed out the game at 15-8. 

The Highlanders put up 17 hits in this strong team win.

Jennifer Page and Bushyhead each had three hits to lead the Highlanders. Bushyhead and Swanson each drove in a team-high four runs. Four other players also produced two hits. Lydia Peterson scored four times on two hits.

Loomis allowed eight hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts in six innings pitched. Crandall allowed one hit and had one strikeout in the one inning pitched. 

Game 2

Houghton and Oswego started game two but the contest was called due to darkness.

Houghton returns to action against Alfred State at their home field on Thursday, March 30 for a doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m.
