FORT PIERCE, FL — The SUNY Maritime Privateers took advantage of a pair of quality pitching performances and a big hitting day, as they swept a doubleheader from the Houghton Highlanders on Thursday, 11-1 and 9-2.
GAME VITALS
Game 1 Score: SUNY Maritime – 11 | Houghton – 1
Game 2 Score: Houghton – 2 | SUNY Maritime – 9
Records: Houghton: 3-5 | SUNY Maritime: 3-1
Venue: Lawnwood Complex Field #2 | Attendance: 75/75
Game 1: The Privateers touched up Houghton starter
Ryan Newtown for four runs in the first inning, which would prove more than enough runs for the win.
Newtown would settle in, allowing only one additional run in four more innings of work, but Maritime's Shane Sullivan baffled the Houghton hitters all day. Sullivan allowed only one run on four hits, allowing only one walk while striking out seven.
Houghton picked up their lone run in the fourth when
Chris VanCheri hit a sacrifice fly to plate
Zach Parr.
Game 2: Houghton jumped out to an early two run lead, opening the game with three straight singles and a double steal by
Jason Kauffeldt and
Zach Parr. Following a strike out and a walk,
Dylan Boprey plated a run and loaded the bases.
The Privateers, however, induced an inning-ending double-play, squashing the Highlanders hopes of a bigger inning.
Maritime starter Brandon Stanley would allow only one more Houghton hit over the next six innings, before turning the ball over Jorge Sorge, who pitched a perfect seventh.
For the Highlanders,
Ethan Cetton looked dominant through the first three innings, striking out six and allowing only one run, but the Privateers exploded for six runs in the fourth, chasing Cetton from the game. They would add three more in the sixth to complete their offensive day.

>> The Privateers collected 27 hits while the Highlanders managed only four.

COACH'S CORNER:
"I give a lot of credit to Maritime and Coach Barbieri. Their pitches took it to us today, and their hitters came up with big hits when they needed them.
"We gave them way too many outs, plays that don't show up as errors in the box score, but should have been outs. It's hard on pitchers, and it's hard on team morale when you give the opposing team an additional six outs.
"We had some hard luck at the plate, hitting into multiple double plays where we hit the ball on the nose, and several other at bats where we stung it but right at a defender. However, we had far more at bats where we allowed the pitcher to dictate the at bat and we did not respond well.
"Thankfully, we have an opportunity at redemption tomorrow. We'll do our best to make sure we're up for it." – Head Coach
Brian Reitnour
