Softball Swept by Chatham on the Road Friday

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Houghton softball is still looking for win number one on the season after losing twice at Chatham on Friday. The Highlanders dropped game one 10-0 in five innings before losing 7-6 in a game two heartbreaker.

GAME 1
Houghton managed just one hit in the opener (double by Rachel Scharf), while the hosts tallied nine hits and put four runs across in the third and another six in the fourth as they got the five-inning victory.

Kayla Loomis pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits. Alisabeth Crandall recorded one out and one hit in relief.

GAME 2
The Highlander bats came alive in the nightcap and pushed the Cougars to the brink, before falling by a run late.

Houghton got a run in the first and two in the second to jump out to an early lead. Elise Swanson doubled home Jen Page to open the scoring, before Scharf drove in Kailey MIller and then scored on an error.

Chatham scored six runs across the third, fourth and fifth innings to go up 6-4, but the Highlanders weren't finished. After Kristin Keller and Crandall got on base in the top of the sixth, Chyanne Bushyhead cleared the bases with a double to centerfield that knotted the score at six. The Cougars would find the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly to center.

Keller led the attack with two hits. Page had a single and scored twice, while a total of eight Highlanders had base hits. Crandall reached base four times on walks.

The Highlanders were plagued by seven errors defensively. Loomis went the distance in the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits and one walk.

Houghton (0-10) is back in action on Wednesday, March 22 when they host Grove City in a home doubleheader. Game one is set for a 4 p.m. start.
