HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball is still searching for their first win after dropping two to Grove City in their home opener. The Highlanders dropped game one 13-5 before losing 5-3 in a hard fought second game.
Game 1
The Wolverines came in and scored first and got one run in the first inning. They then capitalized on their lead in the second and third inning, scoring six.
The Highlanders then answered and got their bats alive in the bottom of the third inning. Hits by
Alisabeth Crandall,
Danielle Nelson, and
Hannah Chorey brought the Highlanders back in the game with five runs scored.
Grove City secured their win by scoring three in the fifth inning and three in the seventh, ending the game with a 13-5 loss for the Houghton Highlanders.
Alisabeth Crandall was the starting pitcher and
Kayla Loomis came in to close the game.
Game 2
The defense for both teams kept the game tight with a 0-0 score until the fourth inning when the Highlanders scored on a Grove City error, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines then answered and scored two in the fifth inning. Grove City built on their lead by scoring three in the top of the sixth inning.
The Highlanders did not give up and kept their bats going in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Chyanne Bushyhead started the inning off with a double, followed by a single by
Rachel Scharf to score Bushyhead, bringing the game to 5-2. As the bottom of the seventh came, the Highlanders could not finish it out and only scored one in the bottom of the seventh.
Kayla Loomis went the distance and pitched all seven innings in this 5-3 loss.
Houghton is back in action on Friday when they host Pitt-Bradford at 4 and 6 p.m.
