The Houghton Men's Tennis Team battled hard against Division II foe, Daemen, Wednesday afternoon falling 8-1 in the end. Despite the lopsided score line, the Highlander's fought valiantly and had many close matches throughout the afternoon. The lone winner of the day for Houghton came at first singles with
Micah Schilke prevailing 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 in a thrilling three set affair.
Other close matches included
Jaimie Staerkle at second singles and
Graham Cook at the final sixth spot. Staerkle would fall 6-3, 7-6 (2) in a match that was tight from start to finish and,
Graham Cook would have a close fight falling with a final score of 2-6, 7-5, 7-10.
"I challenged the men to be fighters today, and they did not fail," Coach
Zach Shilvock said after the match. "Daemen is a solid team and we battled them to the end. You cannot ask for anything more than that. We will clean up our execution in some areas and get after it against Oneonta Saturday."
The Highlanders (3-4) will look to rebound against a tricky Oneonta team Saturday afternoon at home at 1pm.
