HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball went 1-1 for the third-straight doubleheader, splitting two games with SUNY Oswego at home on Tuesday.
The Highlanders lost 1-0 in the first game and claimed a 4-1 victory in game two.
Game 1
Houghton had its best chance to break open the first game in the bottom of the first. A walk, hit by pitch, wild pitch and another walk loaded the bases for the Highlanders, but three-straight strikeouts crushed the scoring opportunities for the hosts. Houghton would strike out 13 times in total in the contest and wouldn't see their first hit until
Elise Swanson singled in the bottom of the sixth. By that time Houghton trailed 1-0 after giving up a run in the top of the sixth.
Kayla Loomis had a strong outing, allowing one run on five hits, but lack of run support sent her to her eighth loss of the season.
Game 2
The Highlanders got two runs in the second and added solo tallies in the fifth and sixth to salvage the split in game two. Houghton took advantage of an error, a walk and a wild pitch to get runners into scoring position in the second inning.
Kristin Keller followed with a single that scored
Alisabeth Crandall and
Carlee Miller.
Oswego scored in the top of the fifth to pull within a run, but another error put
Hannah Haskell on base.
Grace Thompson moved her into scoring position with a bunt single, and Haskell scored on another Laker error.
Houghton tallied three more hits in the sixth to score their final run of the contest.
Loomis picked up the win with anothe solid outing. She went the distance, allowed one run on five hits and struck out five. The Highlanders finished with eight hits, led by
Lydia Peterson's 2 for 4 performance.
"We saw some good pitching today, and it exposed some areas we need to continue to grow in," said Head Coach
Chad Muise. "All year, we have shown that we can grow and accomplish great things, and we will continue to climb into becoming a better team.
Kayla Loomis gave an incredible performance, as she has done all season. We look forward to getting back out this week and continuing to compete.
Houghton (9-8) is back in action on Thursday for a doubleheader at Medaille. Game one starts at 3 p.m.
