BUFFALO, N.Y. – Houghton softball swept Medaille College in an afternoon doubleheader on the road Thursday.
The Highlanders claimed game one 7-2 and completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap. Houghton has now won three straight and has victories in five of its last seven contests. Medaille came into the game with a nine game win streak and an overall record of 11-1.
Game 1
Jen Burrows was in control on the mound, allowing seven hits and just two runs over seven innings to pick up her third win of the season. She had help on the offensive end as the Highlanders finished with 12 hits, led by
Hannah Haskell and
Grace Thompson, who each finished 3 for 4.
Lydia Peterson and
Rachel Scharf added two hits apiece. Thompson and
Carlee Miller each had two RBI.
Game 2
Kayla Loomis had another strong pitching performance for the Highlanders in the nightcap, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added solo runs in the third and fourth innings. The Mavs scored their lone run in the sixth inning before Houghton capped the scoring with another run in the top of the seventh.
Loomis retired all three batters in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.
Houghton batters finished with seven hits on the afternoon.
The Highlanders (11-8) travel to take on Grove City on Saturday with games set for 1 and 3 p.m.
