CLERMONT, Fla. -- Houghton softball got the 2022 season underway with a loss and a win on their first day of The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., on Monday.
The Highlanders opened the day with a 4-0 loss to Regis (Mass.), but bounced back big with a huge 19-0 win over North Central (Minn.).
Game 1
Kayla Loomis had a strong outing on the mound, allowing four runs on six hits, with six strikeouts and three walks. Unfortunately, the Highlanders had just four hits on the offensive side of things.
Lydia Peterson,
Grace Thompson,
Chyanne Bushyhead and
Elise Swanson each had a single, but Houghton never threatened to put any runs across.
Game 2
Hits and runs were not an issue for Houghton in the nightcap against North Central. Houghton scored early and often to take the win. The Highlanders didn't waste any time, plating seven runners in the first, then scoring four, six, and two runs in the next three innings. The game was called after five innings. Thompson had a big game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Rachel Scharf was equally impressive, going 2 for 2 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Hannah Haskell produced two hits, including a triple, and three RBI, while Peterson and
Hannah Chorey each collected two hits.
Alisabeth Crandall was sharp on the mound, earning the win by allowing just two hits over four innings.
Jen Burrows pitched the final inning in relief, allowing just one hit on four batters faced.
The 19 runs were the most scored by Houghton since a 21-3 win over Wells on March 21, 2019.
"It was great to finally get out on the diamond, we did a lot of things well, but need to see through everything we're looking to achieve to continue to grow competitively," said Head Coach
Chad Muise. "In game 2 our team stayed ready and attentive coming back from a rain delay, and they showed that they were mentally prepared. They had a great approach and didn't expand their zone early in the game, and it gave us a lot of opportunities to have some big innings."
The Highlanders return to action Tuesday with games against Rose Hulman (Ind.) and Adrian (Mich.)
