CLERMONT, Fla. -- Houghton softball fell to 1-3 on the season after losing twice on day two of their spring break Florida trip on Tuesday.
The Highlanders opened the day with a close 2-1 loss to Rose-Hulman and closed the day with a 10-5 loss to Adrian College.
Game 1
The first game of the day was a classic pitchers' battle. Both starters went the distance and kept the other team's batters at bay. Rose-Hulman got on the board first with a run in the top of the sixth, thanks to an error, fielder's choice and a couple of stolen bases. The Highlanders responded to even the score in the bottom of the sixth.
Hannah Chorey walked and stole second. And after a
Lydia Peterson ground out,
Grace Thompson reached on another walk.
Hannah Haskell then singled home Chorey to knot the score at one.
Rose-Hulman got its only hit of the day off starter
Kayla Loomis in the top of the seventh. The Fighting Engineers earned a two-out walk, and after the runner advanced on a passed ball, an RBI single gave them the lead, 2-1. Loomis forced a ground out to end the top of the inning, but Houghton batters were unable to muster a run in the bottom half to end the game.
Loomis went the distance, allowing two runs on one hit, while striking out five. Thompson and Haskell had the only hits for the Highlanders.
Game 2
Against Adrian, the Highlanders were able to produce 10 hits, but unfortunately the Bulldogs managed 14Â and doubled up Houghton on the scoreboard, 10-5.
The Highlanders went up 1-0 in the first, fell behind 4-1 after the second, but put another four runs across in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to earn the win.
Loomis again went the distance, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits with four strikeouts and one walk.Â
Offensively, Houghton was led by Haskell's 3 for 3 showing at the plate. She also scored twice and stole a base.
Carlee Miller produced two hits, while Peterson, Thompson,
Alisabeth Crandall and Barb Richert each had singles.
