HOUGHTON, NY— The Nazareth Golden Flyers outscored the Houghton Highlanders, 22-10, over the final quarter of play to pick up their 16
th victory in the regular season finale for both teams.
Houghton played the Golden Flyers tough throughout, leading after the first quarter, 15-12, after
Alexis Klohr closed the opening 10 minutes with a layup to beat the buzzer.
The teams traded leads throughout the second, but Nazareth closed out the half with back-to-back baskets by Chelsea Woodsum and Jadyn Abrams, giving them a three-point advantage at the break.
The third quarter brought more seesaw action, as the teams traded leads multiple times. With 50 seconds left on the clock,
Carlee Miller made a layup to pull Houghton within a single point. On the ensuing possession, Nazareth missed a three but grabbed the offensive rebound. Haley Schoelerman drew a foul and sank both shots from the line, extending the Golden Flyers lead back to three points heading into the final ten minutes.
After
Natalie Rivera hit a free throw to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, pulling Houghton within two points, the remainder of the quarter belonged to Nazareth. While Rivera would score eight total points in the quarter, it simply was not enough, as the Golden Flyers pulled out the win.
