HOUGHTON, NY— Twelve days ago the St. John Fisher Cardinals defeated the Houghton Highlanders in Rochester, 104-34. For much of Tuesday's game it looked like the Highlanders might possibly pull off an improbable bounce-back upset.
Like Novocain, the Cardinals slowly but surely gained the lead and continue to pull away throughout the game, eventually defeating the Highlanders for the second time this season, 65-46.
The two teams played evenly throughout the opening quarter until, with 29 seconds left on the clock,
Alexis Klohr drained a three to put the Highlanders up by three, 14-11, to close out the first 10 minutes.
Abby Guiher quickly opened the second quarter with a three of her own, putting the Highlanders up by six.
For a couple more minutes Houghton maintained that advantage, but the Cardinals eventually reeled off a 12-0 run to take the lead. While the Highlanders played evenly over the ensuing minutes, Fisher entered the locker room holding a 32-25 lead.
In the third the Cardinals slowly built their lead to 10 points before Klohr hit a layup, grabbed a defensive rebound on the other end and found
Carlee Miller, who drained a three to pull Houghton within five with 2:45 remaining.
But the Cardinals capped the quarter with a 6-0 run, taking a 49-38 lead into the final ten minutes.
The fourth would belong to Fisher, as they outscored the Highlanders, 16-8, to close out the game.
